Sprite

Sprite is a white bellied caique that resides at Best Friends Sanctuary in Moab, Utah. In May of 2011, the Caique Crazy Community decided to take up a collection for Sprite and donate to her cause. Here is a little background information on this great little bird:

Sprite is a White-bellied Caique. She arrived at Best Friends in the summer of 2008 along with her friend, Spree, a Black-headed Caique. Sprite and Spree were relinquished to Best Friends when their loving owner could no longer care for them due to a chronic health condition. A few months after her arrival at the sanctuary, Sprite became less energetic, and was discovered to have a growth in her lower abdomen. 

Sprite was a medical mystery, stumping even top avian vets. Her array of symptoms and subsequent test results made treating her various maladies difficult. After much care, Sprite was diagnosed with Avian Gastric Yeast, and put on a round of 30 day antibiotics. After treatment, Sprite rebounds and then relapses with more mysterious symptoms, including blood in her stool, that the avian veterinarians can’t seem to pinpoint an exact cause for. 

After over a year of constant medical care and top notch treatment, Sprite is on the road to recovery, and doing extremely well! Due to her constant illness, the staff at Best Friends decided that Sprite would stay a permanent fixture in their Parrot Garden, to ensure she continues to get the best medical treatment possible, with the staff that has been caring for her all along.

After reading all about Sprite, and finding her picture under the list of birds that needed sponsors, we decided to take up a collection for Sprite. The community pulled through and gathered donations both from forum members and Facebook friends. In July of 2011 we were able to send in a collective donation of $270 for Sprite!

A couple of weeks after the donation was sent in, a representative from Best Friends called me to thank Caique Crazy for our donation, and let us know how much we helped Sprite, and the sanctuary. Thats what our community is for – to give back to others! It makes me very proud that our caique crazy folk can help caiques in need.
